With highly biodiverse ecosystems ranging from stunted heathy dry sclerophyll forests clinging on skeletal rocky sandstone ridgetops to tall open dry sclerophyll forests on the valley floor, from deep open floodplain wetlands to very tall wet sclerophyll forests and lush subtropical rainforests, the landscapes of the Upper Coldstream catchment change drastically across a very small distance.

Because of this, the area supports a rich profusion of biodiversity. With a vascular flora diversity exceeding 1000 native species within an area of barely 10000 hectares, the project area provides habitat for a significant proportion of Australia’s total of 22000 native species.
