While it may seem intuitive that walking through the forest is good your mind, body, and soul, scientists are now discovering just how these nature experiences can actually change your brain… and for the better!

A recent study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found that spending time in nature decreases obsessive, negative thoughts (rumination) by a significant margin. The study showed that for those who went on a 90 minute walk through a natural environment reported lower levels of rumination and showed reduced neural activity in an area of the brain linked to risk for mental illness compared with those who walked through an urban environment. This works suggests that accessible natural areas may be vital for mental health in our rapidly urbanising world.
